چکیده

The increasing computing power of modern smartphones opens the door for interesting mobile image analysis applications. In this paper, we explore the arising possibilities but also discuss remaining challenges by implementing linear and nonlinear diffusion filters as well as basic variational optic flow approaches on a modern Android smartphone. To achieve low runtimes, we present a fast method for acquiring images from the built-in camera and focus on efficient solution strategies for the arising partial differential equations (PDEs): Linear diffusion is realised by approximating a Gaussian convolution by means of an iterated box filter. For nonlinear diffusion and optic flow estimation we use the recent fast explicit diffusion (FED) solver. Our experiments on a recent smartphone show that linear/nonlinear diffusion filters can be applied in realtime/nearrealtime to images of size 176×144. Computing optic flow fields of a similar resolution requires some seconds, while achieving a reasonable quality.

Image Restoration Using A PDE-Based Approach

Image restoration is an essential preprocessing step for many image analysis applications. In any image restoration techniques, keeping structure of the image unchanged is very important. Such structure in an image often corresponds to the region discontinuities and edges. The techniques based on partial differential equations, such as the heat equations, are receiving considerable attention i...

Fast Parameter Sensitivity Analysis of PDE-Based Image Processing Methods

We present a fast parameter sensitivity analysis by combining recent developments from uncertainty quantification with image processing operators. The approach is not based on a sampling strategy, instead we combine the polynomial chaos expansion and stochastic finite elements with PDE-based image processing operators. With our approach and a moderate number of parameters in the models the full...

Image Zooming using Non-linear Partial Differential Equation

The main issue in any image zooming techniques is to preserve the structure of the zoomed image. The zoomed image may suffer from the discontinuities in the soft regions and edges; it may contain artifacts, such as image blurring and blocky, and staircase effects. This paper presents a novel image zooming technique using Partial Differential Equations (PDEs). It combines a non-linear Fourth-ord...

Fast Total Variation-Based Image Reconstruction

We apply a total variation minimization technique for two tasks in image processing: denoising, which is the reconstruction of an image from noisy observations of the image; and deblurring, which is the reconstruction of an image which is convolved with a smooth kernel function and then contaminated with error. Total Variation minimization yields a nonlinear elliptic partial diierential equatio...

PDE-based modeling of image segmentation using volumic flooding

The classical case of morphological segmentation is based on the watershed transform, constructed by flooding the gradient image, which is seen as a topographic surface, with constant height speed. Changing the flooding criteria, (e.g constant-speed height, area or volume) yields different segmentation results. In the field of PDEs and curve evolution the classic watershed transform can be mode...
